3️⃣ Steps to Being Emotionally Well

Emotional Wellness

Before I share these three steps, it may be helpful to define “emotional wellness.”

Below are a few bullet points on what emotional wellness is and is NOT.

Being “emotionally well” means…

  • You understand and feel your emotions.
  • You accept the positive and negative and allow them to be there.
  • You do not indulge in your negative emotions (self-pity, indulgence, etc.).
  • You do not react to your negative emotions or blame them on anyone or anything.
  • You are able to separate emotions from circumstances (others do not determine how we feel).
  • And you are able to handle life’s stresses, adapt to change, and cope with difficult times.

Here are 3 important steps to being emotionally well:

1️⃣ Understand and feel your emotions.

Emotions won’t hurt you. Allow them to be there – you do not have to fix them or cover them up.

Allow yourself to feel anxious or frustrated without reacting to the feeling.

You can recognize and feel negative emotions and accept that good and bad feelings are part of life.

2️⃣ Identify your thoughts that cause your emotions.

Thoughts cause feelings, aka emotions.

If you are feeling anxious, identify the thoughts causing that feeling.

Emotions drive our actions. In other words, we often do something because of how we think it will make us feel. And we don’t do something because we are afraid of how it will make us feel.

You are in control of your thoughts. You get to decide how you will approach and think about every life situation.

3️⃣  Create emotion on purpose.

Creating emotion on purpose means you understand that you are the person who creates your emotions by what you think.

And you can generate the emotion that you most want to create the result you want.

You may want to generate motivation, discipline, love, etc. You get to create the emotions you want.

I go much deeper into mindset and how it shapes our lives in my coaching. If you are interested in learning more, you can book a call HERE.
