Small Joys are Good for the Soul

While self-care looks different for everyone, one commonality is that self-care is often added to the list of “luxury” things when it comes to prioritizing our own time.

But the truth is, you don’t need lavish, expensive, or extended “me time” in order to practice self-care.

In fact, consciously finding joy in small pleasures is a powerful method of self-care.

And there are so many small joys in the changing seasons! Identify the small things that make you happy in the fall… treating yourself to a pumpkin spice latte, buying a deliciously scented candle, walking in the leaves, apple picking with your family, baking a pie…

And an added bonus of these fall activities? The smells!

As you enjoy these experiences and create happy memories, your brain links the smells (pumpkin spice, warm apple pie) with the emotion that you are experiencing (joy).

Researchers have found that odor-linked memories can improve our well-being and have more of a positive impact than memories that are not associated with smell.

This means that by taking time to enjoy little moments of seasonal self-care this year, you will re-up your joy and well-being when you do them again next year!

What is your favorite fall scent? 👇

I shared mine below!

Some of my favorite fall scents and joys:

Nature’s Wick Cinnamon & Apple Scented Candle — Have you used a wooden wick candle yet? We’ve been using them exclusively for the last year since my husband ordered one from Sasquatch. I love campfires and the sound of wood burning so these candles fill me with joy to listen to as they fill the house with wonderful fragrances!

Air Wick Plug-in Scented Oil Starter Kit with Pumpkin Free Decorative Warmer + 2 Refills — My mom bought this set for me last year and we have continued to use them in our bathrooms. We even bought a Christmas one (limited edition–hopefully they’ll have a new one this year) and an all-year warmer. I like the apple and cinnamon fragrance too! In case you want to prepare for Christmas here’s my favorite holiday scent Baked Caramel & Chocolate. 😋

Spice Set of 6 Premium Grade Fragrance Oils – Cinnamon, Harvest Spice, Apple Cider, Coffee Cake, Gingerbread, Pumpkin Pie — If you prefer to diffuse essential oils, this set of 6 fall-inspired “spices” sounds perfect to me! I just ordered it through Amazon and I’m looking forward to testing them all out. We keep diffusers in rooms where we might not remember or see a candle burning like our bedrooms and my office.
