We all need community. It is a desire inside of each of us in our forming. A huge aspect that impacts the quality of our lives and happiness is our social support system.
Social wellness is one aspect of your overall wellness.
The feeling of connection to others, able to access the support of others, and belonging to a group determines our level of social wellness.
Of course, everyone has different levels of need for socialization based on each of our personalities. Introverts, extroverts, etc. But at the end of the day, humans need some level of connection to feel fulfilled.
Oxytocin
Our bodies produce a hormone called oxytocin which is associated with empathy, trust, sexual activity, and relationship-building.
This hormone drives us to desire community and feel a connection.
Isolation has often led to death. This means we are stronger in groups, tribes, and communities. Physically being around other people protects us.
Oxytocin rewards us for the connection with other people.
Physical Connection vs Social Connection
However, since we do not necessarily need to surround ourselves with others just to survive anymore, the desire for physical connection with people has translated to the desire for social connection.
I still strongly believe we need the physical closeness of others to feel complete. If COVID has taught us nothing else, it’s that we need others to be at our best and most complete healthy selves.
Belonging to a community of like-minded individuals – whether that community is 2 people or 20 people – increases your social well-being and your overall health. Studies show that having healthy relationships within a solid social support system lead to a longer, healthier life.
