Yum! It’s soup season!

I love a steaming cup of soup on a chilly day! However, a lot of rich, tasty soups also contain high levels of fat, salt, and carbohydrates – making them a less than ideal choice for your heart health. So what can you do to make your fall soups more heart-healthy?

Your heart health is directly impacted by your diet.

Diets with high cholesterol, high sodium, and saturated and/or trans fats put your heart at risk for serious health conditions.

Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and high blood pressure to name a few.

So 4 Tips for Heart-Healthy Soups this fall:

❤️ Load up on veggies! Nutrient-rich vegetables are a cornerstone of a heart-healthy diet.

Bonus: Choose veggies that are known to improve heart health – like leeks, garlic, tomatoes, and onions.  All of these contain antioxidants that protect your cells and blood vessels from damage.

❤️ Limit the amount of salt in your soups.

Opt for low sodium broths and leave out additional salt if the recipe calls for it.

❤️ Boost protein with lean meats, beans, or lentils.

Lean meats like chicken and turkey are lower in fat than most red meats. Black beans and lentils are also high in fiber – which is known to lower your total blood cholesterol.

❤️ Skip the high fat creams and cheeses.

Most soups are either cream or broth-based. Opting for a low-sodium broth significantly lowers caloric and cholesterol levels.
