I know about 6 weeks ago a lot of us set a goal to get more exercise or movement into our lives. How has that been going? If you are like most people life has gotten busy and some of your plans have fallen to the back burner. Life happens. Here are some tips to get back into exercise again:
10 Tips to Get Back to Exercise
- Start with something easy. Go for a walk or pick up some weights and do 10 bicep curls on each arm.
- Start with 5 minutes. Do some squats while your coffee is brewing or while you’re waiting for the commercials to be over during your nightly TV show.
- Remember how good you feel after exercising. Focus on how successful and positive you feel once you’ve done something for yourself.
- Schedule it the day before. Write it down on your calendar and block out a small window of time to move your body.
- Find a buddy. Having an accountability partner increases the fun and the likelihood that you will follow through with your plans.
- Set out your clothes the night before. You can also set out any equipment you might plan to use too.
- Set a realistic frequency of exercise goal. Although we want everyone to actively move for 30 minutes a day 5 times a week, it’s okay to start with 2-3 times a week. Just start.
- Workout at home. You don’t need to go to the gym these days to get a good workout. There are lots of things you can do at home, especially with virtual classes now readily available.
- Remember your WHY. You are doing this for yourself, to be fit and healthy, to feel better, to live longer, to be happier.
- Start low, go slow. Start with a low-intensity workout so you don’t hurt yourself. The number one reason people quit exercising is that they injure themselves and it’s usually because they started too hard, too fast.
